Our Mission Statement

Plaza Middle School, in partnership with the home and community, is committed to creating a stimulating environment where all students are challenged and supported to reach individual success through a rigorous academic program which prepares them to be globally aware, effective contributors to a community, accepting of individual differences, and college and career ready.

Plaza Middle School opened in 1969. At the time it was a modern, state of the art edifice. Time has been kind to the building, and it has been voted the cleanest middle school in Virginia Beach.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Do you have a gifted program? If so, please explain how I can get my child involved.

A. The Gifted Cluster-Resource Program at Plaza Middle School is a well-developed program that meets both the intellectual and affective needs of gifted students. The goal of the intellectual program is to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Plaza offers many advanced classes including Foreign Languages and Algebra for 7th graders, and Geometry and Earth Science for 8th graders. Parents are an integral part of the program. Workshops for parents are held throughout the school year to discuss topics relating to the gifted program. If you feel that your child is eligible for the program, you should see a school counselor or the Gifted Resource Teacher for testing information. Plaza is also home to an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Academy Program.

Q. What foreign languages are taught?

A. Spanish, French, and Japanese.

Q. What is the average class size?

A. Average class size is 25.

Q. How many students are enrolled at Plaza?

A. The enrollment at PMS is approximately 1080 students.

Q. What assurance do we have that our kids will be safe at Plaza?

A. We are fortunate to have a great security staff at Plaza. The entrances are always managed, a desk is in place for visitor sign-in/out, and passes are assigned to guests with destination noted. Security personnel conduct periodic bathroom and hall checks, and doors are locked for entry from the outside except for the main entrance. All staff members wear ID badges. In accordance with the Code of Student Conduct, students are not permitted in the halls unless they have a signed planner.

Q. Where does my child go if he/she has a problem?

A. There are three full time counselors to assist students with academic and personal concerns. Additionally, the assistant principals and teachers are available for assistance, as well as the school social worker and school psychologist.

Q. Will my child be able to play sports?

A. All students may participate in a sports program. Intramural sports are open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. In order to participate in interscholastic sports a student must pass 5 subjects and have a GPA of 2.0.

Q. Do students get to know school rules and expectations before they attend?

A. During orientation at the beginning of the school year, each grade level attends a program where school rules and other valid information are shared with each student. Students are also given a handbook that contains the Code of Student Conduct, and outlines school expectations, dress code, transportation guidelines and other pertinent data to assist students toward a successful school year.

Q. Is there ample time for students to eat lunch? What about crowding in the lunchroom?

A. There are three 30-minute lunch periods daily. Students are permitted sufficient time for their lunch. There are several serving lines, and an outstanding cafeteria staff working to see that students are served in a timely manner. Students go to lunch in team order, staggered to avoid long lines and delays.
